Ohio's Early Learning Content Standards

The OELCS Seminars presented in 2005 and archived here were sponsored by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education.

Mathematics

Seminar Goals

• Provide regional early math professional development opportunities.
• Build participants' capacity (knowledge base/skills) around math learning in early childhood
• Build participants' ability to support children's learning through intentional teaching guided by the early math learning standards.

Seminar Objectives

• Use Ohio early learning standards for mathematics as the organizing structure for seminar content
• Make connections between competencies needed (standards) for Ohio's children and the knowledge, skill base and effective practices educators need to support children's emergent math understandings within quality early childhood programs
• Utilize faculty from diverse Ohio institutions of higher education to provide consistent research-based information linking early childhood academic content standards with effective teaching strategies and practices
• Provide forum for sharing ideas for the integration of math materials and experiences across the curriculum in the early childhood classroom

English Language Arts (ELA)

Seminar Goals

• Provide regional early literacy professional development to opportunities.
• Build participants' capacity (knowledge base/skills) around language and literacy learning
• Build participants' capacity to support teachers (mentoring, training, etc.)

Seminar Objectives

• Use Ohio pre-kindergarten standards for English Language Arts as organizing structure for seminar content
• Make connections between competencies needed (standards) for Ohio's young children and the knowledge, skill base and effective practices educators need to support children's literacy learning within quality early childhood programs
• Utilize early literacy education "experts" to provide consistent research-based information linking pre-kindergarten academic content standards with effective teaching and learning practices/strategies
• Define the Role of mentors (developing and honing the skills)
• Provide forum for sharing ideas, problem-solving issues/challenges faced in the mentoring Role with classroom teachers (connecting knowledge to practice)
