Module Descriptions

Mathematics

The mathematics module explores the teacher’s role in supporting young children’s early concepts of number relationships. Also examined are the roots of patterning, algebraic and geometric reasoning. Teachers will also increase their knowledge of ways to teach young children about measurement and data analysis through developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant activities. Strong emphasis is placed on support for diverse learners.

Social Studies

The social studies module reflects the belief that social studies curriculum should be approached as a journey to better understand who we are and how we connect family and community. This module focuses on developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant activities related to citizenship and government, social studies skills and methods, people and societies, history, geography and economics. All experiences are designed for diverse learners.

Science

The science module emphasizes that science experiences can be integrated into daily routines and the center/classroom environment. This approach is not the traditional method of teaching individual science lessons. Participants explore the standards, indicators and benchmarks for earth and space sciences, life science and physical science. Strong emphasis is placed on support for diverse learners.

Integrated Curriculum

Please Note: Participants MUST have completed two (2) OELCS modules (ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies); OR Pre-K/K SIRI Module 1 Tools for Early Language and Literacy Teaching, offered through Q-net; OR completed 45 hours of the CORE Curriculum before attending an Integrated Curriculum module.

This course is based on 6 course sessions through 20 contact hours taught in regional locations to groups of early childhood educators. This module provides strategies to support teacher inquiry, community building, and documentation of projects. Creating responsive environments, play, intentional teaching and incidental learning opportunities are continuing themes in all of the content standards modules but a particular focus in this module. The role of assessment and accountability in all early childhood environments is woven throughout the module. Various credit opportunities exist.

Individualized Education Plan, Curriculum and the Ohio Early Learning Content Standards (IEP)

Please Note: We encourage anyone who works with an IEP (special educators, therapists [OT, PT, Speech], general educators, parents/guardians) to attend this module as a team.

This professional development module will explore the use of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) as a tool to access the general curriculum in early childhood settings. The module will begin with the young child’s viewpoint on curriculum, proceed to a discussion of the relationship between curriculum and Ohio’s early learning content standards, and conclude with an exploration of how the IEP can be used as a tool to access that curriculum for young children with disabilities. The role of assessment and documentation relative to these processes will also be explored. Participants will be composed of groups representative of the teams used to form and implement IEPs in their settings.
