This module emphasizes the “big idea” that early childhood science experiences can be integrated into daily routines and the center/classroom environment instead of the traditional science table or separate science lesson. The module explores the standards and benchmarks for earth and space sciences, life science, and physical science. All experiences are designed for diverse learners.
Young children live in a world of movement and from the beginning are drawn to understanding how moving things work. In this module, participants will explore aspects of physical and space science through the lens of movement. Magnets and sound, sun and shadows – these are the familiar elements in a preschooler’s world that provide the vehicle for learning effective teaching strategies and important concepts in early scientific inquiry. Through practicing the steps in the cycle of inquiry, both as learners and as teachers, participants can grow in confidence and excitement in guiding children’s scientific explorations. Strong emphasis is placed on supporting children and their families from a) diverse ability levels, e.g. typically developing and those with identified sp
Young children are fascinated by the changes that occur in their natural environment and can easily be encouraged to look for patterns, comparisons and cause and effect relationships. In this module, participants will learn the reasons and methods for helping children be more systematic in their explorations and observations. Scientific processes may sound too challenging for preschoolers to learn, but participants will experience how easily it can be built upon children’s natural interest in the familiar changes around them – growing plants, growing animals, changing weather and changes in the soil, sand, rocks and water in their environment. Strong emphasis is placed on supporting children and their families from a) diverse ability levels, e.g. typically developing and those with identified special needs; and b) diverse backgrounds, e.g. cultural, family structures, socio-economic levels and urban/rural.
